Fox News host apologizes for remarks

Greg Gutfeld joked about Canadian military

TORONTO -- A Fox News talk show host on Monday issued an apology for on-air remarks made last week about the Canadian military after a protest from the federal government in Ottawa.

"It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize," Greg Gutfeld, host of Fox News' "Red Eye" show said in a statement.

At one point during the late night show, Gutfeld had joked that the Canadian military may want "to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white Capri pants."

Canadian Defense Minister Peter McKay called for an apology Monday before he was due on hand at a military base near Toronto to solemnly receive the remains of four Canadian soldiers killed in combat in Afghanistan over the weekend.

McKay called the American TV show's take on Canada's military efforts in Afghanistan "despicable" and "disgusting."

Gutfeld defended the offending March 17 episode of "Red Eye" show as satirical, but added he realized that his "words may have been misunderstood."

The "Red Eye" segment provoked a Canadian media furor after it was posted to YouTube and Facebook.
