Fox Searchlight: Pregnant with meaning

Again, Fox Searchlight president Peter Rice and his chief lieutenants Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula are steering a course for awards season. The company started 2007 on a high with Oscar noms for "Notes on a Scandal," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "The Last King of Scotland." This awards season, "The Savages," starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney, is shaping up to be a contender. "Waitress," Searchlight's top summer grosser with $19 million at the U.S. boxoffice, already has picked up a Spirit nomination for the late Adrienne Shelly's screenplay. But now all eyes are on another movie with a pregnant heroine, screenwriter Diablo Cody's comedy "Juno," a genuine crowd-pleaser that burst into the top five during the New Year's weekend frame.
