Fox TV Studios targets Latin America

Increasing footprint in Argentina and Chile

Fox TV Studios is expanding its Latin America footprint through a slew of development deals with production companies in Argentina and Chile.

Under one of them, with Argentine's Rosstoc, FtvS is producing a 13-episode series for Argentine broadcaster TeleFe, which also is being developed for the U.S. market.

Based on a half-hour pilot produced by Rosstoc, "Todos Contra Juan" ("Everyone Against Juan"), which will premiere on TeleFe in July, is a dark hourlong comedy about a has-been actor whose efforts to recclaim fame are constantly sabotaged by unsuccessful relationships and embarrassing social encounters.

Penned by Argentine writer Gabriel Nesci, the show features an all-Argentine cast and production team, including Gaston Pauls (Steven Soderbergh's "Guerrilla") in the title role. During production, the local writers will be joined by American writers sent to Argentina by FtvS.

The format is already selling internationally, with broadcasters in Italy, Spain and Germany close to inking deals to produce local versions.

Under the multi-year deal with Rosstoc, FtvS is looking at several other projects, including "Feo" ("Ugly") based on a best-selling memoir of a man chronicling his life as an "ugly" person.

Additionally, FtvS has inked development deals with Argentine production companies Malapop and Quark, and Chile's Efe3 in Chile, which is co-owned by actor Cristian de la Fuente.

"It's almost like having remote development," said FtvS's Argentinian-born president Emiliano Calemzuk. "We're looking for creative talent who have great show ideas for their local markets that we can also work globally."

With Malapop, FtvS is developing "Perra," a drama about a poor, abused girl from a rural community who runs away to seek fortune in the big city and ends up running the town. The project hails from Gustavo Marra, creator of Argentina's top rated telenovela "Resistire."

Quark, owned by Argentine director Jorge Nisco, is shepharding "Tramas" ("Plots") based on the true story of a bank robbery in Mexico. FtvS is in the process of selling that series to networks in Argentina, Mexico and Columbia.

FtvS alrady is active in Latin America with the production of 13-episode English-language series "Mental" in Colombia and game shows "Family Trust" and "Family Dance-Off" in Chile.
