Fox's 'Dance' back in spotlight with Wed. win

Fox's reality series "So You Think You Can Dance" led the field Wednesday, according to preliminary estimates released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research.

The two-hour episode averaged 7.8 million total viewers between 8-10 p.m., and a 5.0 rating/9 share in the demo. It was enough to top ABC at 8 p.m. with "The Next Best Thing" (7 million, 2.1/7) and at 9 p.m. with "American Inventor" (6.1 million, 2.2, 7). CBS, NBC and the CW aired reruns in that block, with the exception of NBC's "Last Comic Standing" at 9 p.m.

At 10 p.m., NBC reigned in the demo with "Dateline" (3.0/9), but CBS scored more total viewers, 8.6 million, with a rerun of "CSI: NY."

Nightly averages: Fox (7.8 million, 3.1/10), CBS (7 million, 1.9/6), NBC (6.5 million, 2.5/8), ABC (5.6 million, 1.9/6) and the CW (1.5 million, 0.6/2).
