Fox's 'Horton' hears third echo

Its $104 mil is largest foreign haul for a Seuss pic

A soft presummer-blockbuster weekend on the international circuit saw 20th Century Fox International's "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!" take the No. 1 spot for the third straight weekend with an estimated $10.6 million from 5,307 screens in 56 markets.

All of the weekend's top five domestic boxoffice titles played overseas, with Sony's "21" leading the pack with a debut on 975 screens in six markets for an estimated $8.1 million, enough to qualify as the No. 2 international hit (domestically, it was No. 3). Its early worldwide tally stands at $70.4 million.

The drama starring Jim Sturgess about six MIT students applying their mathematical skills to win at blackjack grabbed the top spot in five markets including Germany, with an estimated $2.2 million from 300 screens and the U.K., where "21" won $3.2 million from 355 sites. This weekend will see the title open in 13 market territories including Italy, Brazil and Russia.

Universal's "Leatherheads," the period football comedy with George Clooney, the No. 5 domestic title, tackled $2.3 million in its second weekend overseas at 545 screens in the U.K., Italy and the Ukraine. The No. 4 domestic title, "Nim's Island," the family fantasy with Jodie Foster which Universal/Summit International is releasing overseas, drew $3.6 million from 808 screens in seven markets.

Fox's "Street Kings," which finished No. 2 domestically, grossed $1.2 million from 322 screens in 10 markets, including first-place finishes in Thailand and Singapore. Sony opened in Australia "Prom Night," the horror outing which finished No. 1 domestically, to an estimated $850,000 from 123 sites.

Another solo-market bow was Fox's release of Martin Scorsese's Rolling Stones documentary, "Shine a Light," in the band's home turf — the U.K. — where it finished 13th in the market with an estimated $704,000 from 160 screens. The gross includes what Fox said are proceeds "from the April 2 premiere event."

With an overseas gross total to date of $104.9 million ($244.5 million worldwide), "Horton" became the biggest-grossing Dr. Seuss title internationally, outpacing 2003's "The Cat in the Hat" ($32.8 overseas, $134 million globally) and 2000's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" ($85 million internationally, $345 million worldwide).

The recently red-hot France market continues to perk as "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis," Dany Boon's rural comedy smash, reclaimed the No. 1 market slot in its seventh frame with an estimated $5.8 million from 825 screens, for a France cume of $165 million. Overall, it came in No. 3 in the overseas gross rankings.

Finishing fourth was Universal/Summit International's "Step Up 2 the Streets," which opened at No. 3 in Paris and suburbs and drew an estimated $4.9 million overall from 1,697 sites in 32 territories. The film's international total stands at $71.2 million (worldwide, $129 million). Paramount's "The Spiderwick Chronicles" finished at No. 5, and hoisted its international total to $66.1 million thanks to a $4.3 million weekend at 3,025 screens in 59 markets.

Studio Canal's "Disco," a comedy directed by Fabien Onteniente which was last stanza's No. 1 market title in France, finished second in the territory this round with an estimated $4.1 million from 824 sites for a cume of $12.6 million. (Both "Bienvenue" and "Disco" played French-speaking Belgium and Switzerland, but gross figures from these markets were not available Sunday.)

Despite a soft France opening, Disney's "The Game Plan" took in $3 million from 1,900 screens in 18 markets for a cume of $47.5 million.

Fox's horror outing "Shutter" grossed $3.1 million from 1,135 screens in 23 markets (cume, $6.8 million). Warner's "10,000 BC" pulled $2.8 million — a 53% drop from the previous weekend — from 3,300 sites in 62 territories (its cume stands at $158.7 million).

Sony's political drama "Vantage Point" took in $2.6 million from 1,680 screens in 60 markets (its cume is $72.4 million). Fox's "27 Dresses" drew $2.3 million from 900 situations in 14 markets (its cume now stands at $69.4 million); and Fox's "Jumper" bounced to $2.1 million from 1,304 screens in 16 markets (its total cume so far is $128.6 million). Summit's teen drama, "Never Back Down," yielded $2.1 million from 518 situations in five markets.

Playing in Japan were Disney's "Enchanted," which drew an estimated $1.1 million in its fifth weekend at 403 screens, lifting its overseas cume to $209.4 million ($336.4 million worldwide); and Paramount's "Cloverfield," which drew $1.2 million in its second weekend at 234 sites for an overseas total of $84.1 million.

Other international cume updates: Fox's "Juno," $78.1 million (including non-Fox markets); Universal's "Definitely, Maybe," $16 million; Fox's "Meet the Spartans," $37.9 million; New Line's "The Golden Compass," $290 million (as of April 10); Fox's "The Darjeeling Limited," $18.4 million; Paramount's "No Country for Old Men," $82.7 million; Fox's "La Misma Luna," $7 million; Universal's "The Other Boleyn Girl," $28.8 million (Universal territories only); Fox's "Hitman," $52 million; Paramount's "Drillbit Taylor," $11.1 million; Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks," $140.2 million; Sony's "Casi Davas," $920,000 in its opening at 350 screens in Mexico; and Fox's "Savages," $1.8 million.
