Fox's 'Prada' dressed to impress

Crosses $100 mil overseas in third week at No. 1 spot

In a relatively quiet session internationally, 20th Century Fox's "The Devil Wears Prada" dominated for the third consecutive weekend, logging an estimated $19 million from about 8,000 screens in 46 markets and strutting through the cumulative $100 million gross mark overseas.

The behind-the-scenes look at a glossy fashion magazine opened solidly in Sweden (an estimated $617,000 from 66 screens for a per-screen average of almost $9,500) and logged stylish holdover weekends in the key U.K., Germany and Italy markets. Its overall international total now stands at $104 million.

"Prada," starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, secured an estimated $3.5 million in Italy (down just 4% from the previous weekend) from 440 screens for a market total of $8.8 million. In Germany, the drop from last weekend was a benign 14%, with an estimated $3.4 million from 606 screens for a market total of $9.3 million. The U.K. provided an estimated $2.6 million from 450 screens, a drop of 25% from last weekend, for a market cume of $17.6 million.

Warner Bros. International said "The Prestige," the No. 1 film in North America during the weekend, dipped its toes in three Asian markets, snaring an estimated $964,000 and finishing No. 1 in Taiwan and No. 2 in Singapore.

In Taiwan, the sci-fi/fantasy about rival magicians starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale grossed an estimated $700,000 from 78 sites for a per-screen average of almost $9,000. In Singapore, "Prestige" pulled an estimated $200,000 from 29 sites, while in Malaysia, the tally was $67,000 from 30 locations. The worldwide gross for "Prestige" stands at $15.8 million.

Sony Pictures Releasing International bowed Sofia Coppola's "Marie Antoinette," starring Kirsten Dunst, in the U.K. and Portugal for an estimated $1.1 million at 266 screens.

Propelled by a solid No. 1 opening in France, "Open Season" hauled in an estimated $7.7 million during the weekend from 2,815 screens in 25 markets, enough to qualify as the weekend's No. 2 title overall.

In addition to France, where the estimated gross was $2.2 million from 664 screens, Sony's animation title logged No. 1 bows in French-speaking Switzerland ($145,000 from 23 screens) and in Malaysia ($140,000 from 37 sites). Its international gross total now stands at $23.6 million ($93.2 million worldwide).

Paramount/UIP's "World Trade Center," despite a No. 1 opening in Hong Kong, a No. 2 bow in Argentina and strong holdover action in Italy and Japan, slipped to No. 3 with an estimated $6.9 million during the weekend from 3,200 screens in 50 territories. The biggest markets for the Oliver Stone Sept. 11 drama were Italy (an estimated $1.7 million from 312 screens for a $4.4 market total) and Japan ($1.6 million from 321 locations for a cume of $12.5 million). "WTC's" overall international total stands at $69.9 million.

Finishing fourth for the weekend was "The Guardian," which Buena Vista International (which handles Walt Disney Co. titles) reports pulled an estimated $5.2 million at about 3,100 screens in 15 territories, raising its overseas total to $9.2 million. The Coast Guard rescue drama, starring Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher, had strong openings in the U.K. (finishing No. 3 with an estimated $1.5 million from 350 sites) and in Mexico ($1 million from 325 screens for a No. 2 ranking).

At No. 5 is Warners' "The Departed," which muscled its way to an estimated $5.1 million from about 1,200 screens in 13 markets. The Martin Scorsese crime drama starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon finished No. 1 in its second weekend in Australia (an estimated $1.4 million from 276 sites for a market cume of $3.9 million) and first in its third weekend in the U.K. ($2.8 million from 362 screens for a market cume of $15.4 million).
