Fremantle appoints Barua India MD

Joins from Discovery Asia, will be based in Mumbai

NEW DELHI -- FremantleMedia India has appointed Saurindra Kumar Barua as managing director, based in Mumbai, who will report to Singapore-based FremantleMedia Asia CEO Patrick Schult.

“Barua will build a new team and will work closely with various divisions within the FremantleMedia group to leverage its relationships and its content to establish a production operation to service the Indian market," Fremantle said regarding his new position, in a statement over the weekend.

Barua comes from Discovery Asia, where he was vice president and regional CFO for Asia-Pacific based, in Singapore.

Fremantle is part of German media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG and has had a presence in India licensing and coproducing local versions of its popular formats such as “Indian Idol” and “India's Got Talent."

Fremantle's global competitor Endemol established its India presence by establishing its Mumbai office in 2006 and has produced local versions of “Fear Factor” and “Big Brother."
