Fresh faces create comedy buzz

MONTREAL -- Kurt Metzger, Tommy Johnagin and Geoff Keith were standouts at the second New Faces showcase of up-and-coming standups at the Just For Laughs festival here Thursday night.

Metzger's closing set earned strong reviews from industry observers and local comedy fans alike. He scored with jokes about various topics, including relationship issues, his own looks and why God is likely a woman.

Johnagin kept the crowd well entertained with bits about getting beat up, pregnancy scares, ugly prostitutes and commercials encouraging the use of seat belts.

Keith got solid laughs for a set that included jokes about being dumped on April Fools Day and his requirements for women.

Industry buzz was also building for JFL's first-ever sketch show, hosted by Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, who were warmly and loudly welcomed by the Montreal audience.

The duo of Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braun has been getting particularly positive industry reviews for edgy alternative sketches, including one about the first-ever phone conversation.

And the Buffoons had the audience in stitches with sketches featuring such characters as construction workers discussing the lunch their wives packed for them and an annoying waiter.

Viral videos by U.K. duo Straitjacket that were featured during the sketch showcase also got strong audience reactions.
