ABC's drama is tops for the night

ABC carried Thursday's primetime block in the key adults 18-49 demographic, then had a promising debut Friday night for the new drama "Women's Murder Club."

"Murder" averaged 10.8 million viewers and a 2.5 rating/8 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates released over the weekend by Nielsen Media Research. That not only won the hour for ABC in viewership and the demo but also made it the night's top show in adults 18-49 (tied with CBS' drama "Numbers"). It came at the expense of CBS' "Moonlight" (7.3 million, 2.0/6), with the vampire drama coming in third place at 9 p.m. against "Murder" and Fox's Boston Red Sox-Cleveland Indians ALCS game (7.4 million, 2.3/8).

Meanwhile, at 8 p.m. Friday, NBC's "Deal or No Deal" (10.2 million, 2.4/8) was part of a three-way tie in the demo with CBS' "Ghost Whisperer" (8.8 million, 2.4/9) and the Red Sox-Indians game. NBC saw a sharp drop hour-to-hour for "Friday Night Lights" (5.4 million, 1.7/5) and came in second place at 10 p.m. with "Las Vegas" (7.1 million, 2.1/6) ahead of the second-season premiere of ABC's "Men in Trees" (7 million, 1.9/6) and behind CBS' "Numbers" (9.1 million, 2.5/8).

"Grey's Anatomy" averaged 19 million viewers and a 7.9 rating/19 share in adults 18-49 Thursday night, according to preliminary estimates released Friday by Nielsen Media Research. That's up 4% week-to-week, enough to win the hour and the night in the demo ahead of the viewership winner, CBS' "CSI" (19.8 million, 6.1/15). "CSI" fell 5% in adults 18-49 compared with last week. NBC's hourlong "The Office" (8.9 million, 4.7/11) was up slightly.

All three 9 p.m. programs dripped into the next hour, with "Grey's" going until 10:03 p.m. and the other two stopping at 10:01 p.m. ABC's "Big Shots" (8.5 million, 3.6/10) and CBS' "Without a Trace" (13.6 million, 3.6/10) tied ahead of NBC's "ER" (8.5 million, 3.5/10). "Big Shots" held steady week-to-week, while "Without a Trace" and "ER" fell slightly.

CBS won at 8 p.m. with "Survivor: China" (14.2 million, 4.6/13), which was up slightly. ABC's "Ugly Betty" (10.4 million, 3.5/10) was up a little, as well. NBC's "My Name Is Earl" (7.8 million, 3.1/9) dropped 6%, while "30 Rock" (6.6 million, 3.0/8) fell 11% after a record from last week's season premiere, featuring Jerry Seinfeld in a guest role.

Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" (8.1 million, 2.3/6) fell slightly, while "Don't Forget the Lyrics" (5.6 million, 1.9/5) was up slightly.

ABC (12.8 million, 5.1/13) led primetime in adults 18-49, followed by CBS (15.9 million, 4.8/13), NBC (8.2 million, 3.8/10), Fox (6.8 million, 2.1/5), and the CW (4 million, 1.5/4).
