'Frozen' Character Gains Popularity as Baby Name

Elsa's hair

Even though Disney's animators had wrestled with braids for 2011's Tangled, the hair for Elsa was vastly more complicated: While Rapunzel carried 27,000 extralong strands on her head, the Frozen team found themselves dealing with upward of 400,000 CG threads -- a feat that required the invention of a new program, called Tonic, to execute.

The names Elsa and Logan are jumping from the big screen to birth certificates, following the releases of the Disney animated hit and the X-Men films.

Frozen is a big hit—in the maternity ward.

Elsa, the ice queen played by Idina Menzel in the Disney animated hit, is gaining popularity as a name for newborns, according to parenting website Babycentre.co.uk.

The character name has broken into their top 100 name list for the first time ever by entering at number 88, thanks to an increase of 243 registrations since 2013. It's particularly popular in Sweden, where it is the third most popular name.

The name of the film's other sibling, Anna (Kristen Bell), has always been a hot option, remaining in the top 50 since 1990. It currently ranks at number 35 in the U.S., and in the top 12 in Austria, Hungary, Iceland, Denmark, Italy, Norway and the Netherlands.

"We're delighted that Elsa is a popular name for babies and it's lovely to hear that for many families, it is actually their siblings who have chosen it," said Anna Hill, vice president, Disney UK, in a statement. "We've been bowled over by the response to Frozen—it's now the fifth biggest film of all time and families are really connecting with Elsa's fight to overcome her fears and the powerful strength of the family bond which has helped her to achieve this."

Among newborn boys, the name Logan is up 33 places to number 14 in 2014, one of the highest risers so far. It's possibly due to the popularity of the X-Men franchise, as Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is commonly known as Logan.
