Fukuoka to honor director Ann Hui

Director gave Chow Yun-fat, Andy Lau early starts

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong director Ann Hui, who first cast Asian superstars Chow Yun-fat and Andy Lau in the early 1980s, will receive the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize from the Japanese city in September.

It marks the first time a Hong Kong director or a woman has been awarded the grand prize. The Fukuoka prize committee commended Hui, who most recently directed "Ordinary Heroes," for her versatility, calling her "a driving force for the Hong Kong film industry."
