'Fun Home' to Land on Broadway in Spring 2015
The Pulitzer Prize-finalist musical, based on the graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel and penned by Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron, premiered at the Public Theater in Fall 2013.
Fun Home has finally found its home on Broadway.
The musical, based on the graphic memoir by Alison Bechdel, will debut at Circle in the Square on April 4, 2015, with an official opening set for April 22, 2015 — just making the 2015 Tony Awards consideration deadline. With book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and music by four-time Tony nominee Jeanine Tesori, the show follows a grown-up Allison as she revisits her childhood and adolescence, wrestling with her sexuality, artistry and troubled relationship with her father and his subsequent suicide.
Produced by Fox Theatricals (Kristin Caskey and Mike Isaacson) and Barbara Whitman, the musical premiered at the Public Theater, where its sold-out run extended four times. It was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for drama — a rarity for a musical — and it also received the Lucille Lortel, Outer Critics Circle and New York Drama Critics Circle Awards for best musical in the 2013-2014 Off-Broadway season.
Many of the original creative team members will return for the Broadway outing. Sam Gold, who won an OBIE for his work, will direct, and the team also includes Danny Mefford (choreography), David Zinn (set and costumes), Ben Stanton (lighting), Kai Harada (sound design), and Chris Fenwick as musical director.
The Public Theater cast included Michael Cerveris, Judy Kuhn, Beth Malone, Sydney Lucas, Alexandra Socha, Griffin Birney, Noah Hinsdale, Roberta Colindrez and Joel Perez. Cerveris and Kuhn won Lucille Lortel Awards for their performances, and Lucas received an OBIE for her performance. The Broadway cast will be announced at a later date.
In addition to Fox Theatricals and Whitman, Carole Shorenstein Hays, Tom Casserly, Paula Marie Black, Latitude Link, Terry Schnuck/Jack Lane, Nathan Vernon, Elizabeth Armstrong, JAM Theatricals and Scott M. Delman will also serve as producers.
