'Game Plan' gains yardage to stay at top spot in polls


After the dust settled at the domestic boxoffice during the weekend, Disney's "The Game Plan" picked up a few more ducats at the turnstiles and Universal's "The Kingdom" lost a few compared with early Sunday estimates.

"Game Plan" tackled the top spot with $23 million in its bow, up about $300,000 from early industry estimates thanks to better-than-projected Sunday business, which is indicative of positive word-of-mouth. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars in the PG family comedy, helmed by Andy Fickman, about an NFL quarterback who finds out that he has a daughter from a previous relationship.

Fellow newcomer "Kingdom" arrived in the second spot with $17.1 million, off slightly from the projected $17.7 million. Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner and Chris Cooper star in the action-thriller, about a group of FBI agents that go to Saudi Arabia to investigate an attack against Americans in that country. Peter Berg directed the R-rated feature.

MGM's "Feast of Love," an R-rated drama helmed by Robert Benton that features an ensemble cast, debuted in 1,200 theaters and placed 12th overall with $1.7 million. The per-theater average was a weak $1,423, so the film might have a difficult time holding on to theaters in the weeks ahead.

Overall, the domestic boxoffice for the weekend was down from the comparable frame a year earlier. The total for the 122 films tracked by The Hollywood Reporter was $90.8 million, off 9% from last year's $100.3 million.

Moving forward, "Game Plan" might have some legs as it generated a sterling 97% favorable grade from moviegoers, according to CinemaScore -- all but guaranteeing favorable word-of-mouth. That, combined with the fact that the family-friendly film won't be facing direct competition for its primary audience for a while, should keep the chains moving down the boxoffice sidelines.

There were slightly more females in attendance than males (57%-43%) for "Game Plan," and youngsters were there in significant numbers as well, with 41% of the audience being under 18. Parents most likely were in the 47% group that was 25 and up. The film's subject matter was the top reason for attending, CinemaScore said, followed by Johnson's star power.

"Kingdom" received a more moderate 87% positive score from those in attendance. The film skewed male, with 59% of the audience comprising that gender, and played older, with a large 65% in the 25-and-up group. Like "Game Plan," the subject matter was the film's biggest draw, followed by Foxx.

Several high-profile limited releases arrived on the scene during the weekend, the highest-grossing among the group being Fox Searchlight's "The Darjeeling Limited," an R-rated comedy from director Wes Anderson. "Darjeeling" took in $134,938 from two theaters in two days -- the film was released Saturday -- making for a stout $67,469 per-theater average. Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman and Adrien Brody star in the offbeat comedy.

Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution," from Focus Features, carried the rarely given NC-17 rating and went out in one location in New York, taking in $63,918. The erotic espionage thriller, starring Tony Leung and Tang Wei, expands Friday to select cities.

The previous weekend's boxoffice champ, Sony/Screen Gems' "Resident Evil: Extinction," was bumped to the third slot overall. It dropped a steep 66% from its opening, taking in $8 million and advancing its 10-day total to $36.8 million.

Lionsgate's "Good Luck Chuck" was in the fourth spot with $6.2 million, off 54% in its sophomore session. The romantic comedy has collected $23.5 million so far and faces stiff competition this weekend from Paramount's "The Heartbreak Kid," an R-rated romantic comedy starring Ben Stiller.

Lionsgate's "3:10 to Yuma" continues to hold up well as it placed fifth with $4.2 million -- down 32% from a week ago -- taking its total to $44 million.
