Emmys: 'Game of Thrones' Sets Record With Best Drama Series Win

The HBO show, which after Sunday night boasts 38 total wins, topped 'Frasier' for most Emmy nods for a series.

HBO's Game of Thrones won the Emmy for best drama series on Sunday night. The show's 38 total Emmy wins means it has now beat Frasier's record for most Emmy wins of all time.

The show beat out FX's The Americans, Netflix's House of Cards, PBS' Downton Abbey, AMC's Better Call Saul, USA's Mr. Robot and Showtime's Homeland.

Writers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss accepted the award on the cast's behalf, crediting their hard work for show's success.

Game of Thrones led all nominees with 23 total and took home three awards during the show, including best writing and best directing for a drama series. The series also won nine awards at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Backstage, the drama's tight-lipped showrunners were hesitant when asked about the series' upcoming seasons as the fantasy drama nears its end. "It will be bigger. And it will be better. And it will also be worse. But mostly better," Weiss said cautiously — an answer which elicited cheers from the cast and other producers present.

When the question turned to possible spinoffs, Benioff was equally vague and punted the question to Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin.

"You might want to ask George about that. It's a great world George created and a very rich world," said Benoiff. "I'm sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us this is it."

Martin quickly stepped up to the mic: "I do have thousands of pages of fake history of everything that led up to Game of Thrones, so there's a wealth of material there and I'm still writing more. But at the moment I still have this show to finish and two books to finish, so that's all speculation for now."

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the 2016 Primetime Emmy Awards, which aired live on ABC from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.
