Gap Band bassist Robert Wilson dies

Musician played on '80s classics 'Outstanding,' 'Bomb'

Bassist Robert Wilson of the Gap Band died in California Sunday. He was 53.

Widely known as the "Godfather of Bass Guitar," Wilson suffered a heart attack in his home in Palmdale. He was scheduled to perform at Tulsa's Timeless Music Festival on Aug. 28.

Wilson's bass grooves helped the Gap Band, a Tulsa, Oklahoma-based trio formed with his brothers Charlie and Ronnie, score the 1980s pop-funk hits "Outstanding," "You Dropped a Bomb On Me" and "Yearning for Your Love."
