Gaumont eyes animation buy

PARIS -- French producer, distributor and international sales powerhouse Gaumont is in exclusive negotiations to buy Alphanim, one of the country's top animation production companies, Gaumont said Thursday.

Founded in 1997 by Christian Davin, Alphanim boasts more than 700 hours of programming in its catalog, including popular series "Galactik Football," "Robot Boy" and "Delta State."

The company will have delivered more than 90 half-hour programs by the end of 2007 and attained total revenue of 22 million euros ($32.2 million).

"This acquisition is in line with Gaumont's approach to more diversification in the production and distribution of television programs," Gaumont said in a statement.
