12 Years a Slave scored four nominations — including the top honor of best cast, where it will compete with American Hustle, August: Osage County, Dallas Buyers Club and Lee Daniels’ The Butler — as nominations for the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced Wednesday morning. August: Osage County, Dallas Buyers Club and The Butler each received three nominations, with two each going to American Hustle, Captain Phillips and Nebraska.
On the TV side, Breaking Bad scored the most nominations with four, including a stunt award nomination. 30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland and Modern Family each scored three nominations. Arrested Development, Downton Abbey, Veep, miniseries Top of the Lake and telepic Behind the Candelabra got two nominations each.

Slave, which has been overshadowed in some of the early critics’ voting, staked out a strong position among the SAG nominees, with a best actor nomination going to Chiwetel Ejiofor for playing a free man kidnapped into slavery, and supporting noms going to Michael Fassbender as a sadistic slave owner and Lupita Nyong’o as the slave woman in whom he takes a particular interest.
Other acting teams that scored with the SAG voters include Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, who play husband and wife in The Butler; Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, who play a battling mother and daughter in August; Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, who play two very different individuals battling AIDS in Dallas; Bruce Dern and June Squibb, who play a squabbling married couple in Nebraska; and Tom Hanks, who plays a captain whose ship is hijacked by Barkhad Abdi‘s pirate in Captain Phillips. In a list dominated by older, experienced actors, Abdi, making his film debut, was the newcomer.
Jennifer Lawrence, who won a SAG award at the last ceremony for her lead performance in David O. Russell‘s Silver Linings Playbook, got a supporting nom for her role in the director’s new film American Hustle. And James Gandolfini, who has received three individual SAG noms for his work in The Sopranos, received a posthumous nom as a supporting film actor for his work as a divorced man ready to take another chance at love in Enough Said.

In addition to Streep, the best actress nominees include Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Judi Dench for Philomena and Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks.
Thanks to The Butler, August and Philomena, The Weinstein Co. led film distributors with seven noms. Fox Searchlight followed with five.
Among TV channels, HBO landed a leading 13 nominations, with AMC pulling in five nods. Netflix, however, followed its breakthrough Emmy performance with three SAG nominations, including one for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for Kevin Spacey in House of Cards.
With their respective acting noms, Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) and Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) set SAG Awards nomination records. Falco surpassed David Hyde Pierce‘s (Frasier) record for most career noms with 20, while Baldwin picked up two mentions Wednesday — including an ensemble nom for the departed comedy — to hit the 20 nomination mark.
Scandal star Kerry Washington continued her big year, following her Emmy nomination with her first SAG acting nom for the ABC political thriller. (She was previously part of the ensemble nomination for 2004’s feature film Ray.) Other notable noms included Rob Lowe for actor in a movie or mini in National Geographic’s Killing Kennedy, the cabler’s first-ever SAG Award nomination. The Big Bang Theory‘s Mayim Bialik also broke through in the actress in a comedy category, picking up her first solo nomination to go with the show’s third series mention. (The former Blossom star has earned Emmy noms in the supporting category.)
It was previously announced that Rita Moreno would receive the Life Achievement Award.

SAG-AFTRA president Ken Howard, SAG Awards social media ambassador Sasha Alexander (TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles) and Clark Gregg (ABC’s Agents of SHIELD) unveiled the nominees in an announcement that was webcast live on TNT and TBS’ websites.
The awards will be handed out Saturday, Jan. 18, in a ceremony to be simulcast on TNT and TBS live at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.
