The City of Springdale, Ark., is defending its decision to release the police report of 19 Kids and Counting star Josh Duggar last month.
In a statement posted Thursday on the town website, City Attorney Ernest B. Cate writes:
On 5/20/15, in full compliance with Arkansas law, the Springdale Police Department responded to a records request under the Arkansas Freedom of Information Act. The requested record was not sealed or expunged, and at the time the report was filed, the person listed in [the] report was an adult. Any names of minors included in the report, as well as pronouns, were redacted from the report by the Springdale Police Department in compliance with Arkansas law prior to release.
The statement comes days after Megyn Kelly‘s exclusive Fox News interview with Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar about allegations that their son Josh sexually molested five girls 12 years ago when he was 15, including his sisters. Jim Bob told Kelly in The Kelly File interview on Wednesday that authorities assured the parents that Josh’s 2006 police report was protected from being released because he and those listed were minors.
Cate’s release states that the report “was not sealed or expunged” because Josh “was an adult” when the report was filed; Josh was 18 in 2006. Though the statement does not specifically mention the Duggars, it references a report that was released May 20, the day before InTouch broke the news.
During Wednesday’s interview on Fox, the oldest daughters in the Duggar family, Jill Dillard and Jessa Seewald (both married), revealed that they were victims of the molestations. Kelly will interview the daughters in depth on Friday’s The Kelly File, airing at 9 p.m. ET on Fox News.
