Oscars: Bosnia and Herzegovina Selects ‘The Son’ for International Feature Film Category

Bosnia and Herzegovina has selected Ines Tanovi?’s The Son (Sin) as its submission for the international feature film category at the 2020 Oscars.

The film tells the story of 18-year-old Arman, an adopted son with an unstable character who is in constant struggle for identity. Arman’s restlessness and misdirected energy take toll on his 14-year-old stepbrother, Dado, who is drawn into a vicious circle of drug addiction in a bid to be as cool as Arman.

The Son premiered at the Sarajevo International Film Festival last month.

It is Tanovi?’s second feature; her 2015’s debut, Nasa svakodnevna prica (Our Everyday Life) was also submitted by Bosnia and Herzegovina for the best international feature Oscar race but failed to earn a nomination.

Bosnia and Herzegovina has submitted a film for the Oscars every year since 1994. Danis Tanovic’s No Man’s Land won a statuette in 2001, and the same director’s An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker made it to the January shortlist in 2013.

The 92nd Academy Awards are due to take place Feb. 9, 2020.
