Bill Murray is concerned that none of his A-list friends will show up to his “Murray Christmas” special. A snowstorm has hit New York, closing the airports, and Murray feels chances are low for appearances by invited guests including Sir Paul McCartney (and even Pope Francis).
So goes the storyline for Murray, who plays himself in Netflix’s Sofia Coppola-directed A Very Murray Christmas, set at New York’s Carlyle Hotel. The hour-long special features a star-studded cast, including Amy Poehler, who arrives to raise Murray’s spirits since the show must go on.
The film also features George Clooney, Chris Rock, Miley Cyrus,Jason Schwartzman, Michael Cera, Maya Rudolph and Rashida Jones. One scene shows Murray singing a Christmas duet with Cyrus, and while another shows him racing against the clock to make his show a success just when Cera expresses that the Christmas show is sounding like a “Christ-mess.”
“Tonight will go down as the greatest night in history,” replies Murray. “We have George Clooney.” Clooney’s attendance reassures Cera, who asks Murray if he saw Monuments Men, to which Murray replies, “I was in it.”
The special is written by Murray, Coppola and Mitch Glazer and executive produced by Coppola, Glazer, Roman Coppola and Tony Hernandez. A Very Murray Christmas debuts on Netflix on Dec. 4.
