Taylor-Johnson, dressed in a Tom Ford suit, began his acceptance speech by thanking the fashion designer and film director. “Tom Ford, thank you so much for this opportunity,” he said as he took the stage. “Creating this role and collaborating on this journey [was] an immense joy.”
The actor went on to thank co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Shannon for “raising the bar high.”
Backstage, the actor talked with reporters about the “grueling” shooting process and working with Ford.
“Every day was pretty intense and grueling. The first scene was a big car crash. Jake Gyllenhaal is an incredible actor, and my challenge was to get a reaction out of him,” he said.
On being cast in the film, Taylor-Johnson added, “I was perplexed why Tom Ford chose me for a role like this. It was definitely out of my comfort zone. I spent three months before shooting watching documentaries about series killers and psychopaths.”
The actor didn’t forget to thank his parents after receiving the honor. “I found acting when I was 6 years old. [My parents] gave me that opportunity, and I ran with it,” he said. “I found my passion and joy. I lived outside the city, and it would take me an hour and a half to get in, and my mom gave up her job to really help me do what I love.”
Focus Features went to extreme lengths during its awards campaign for Nocturnal Animals, going so far as to send each member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association two bottles of one of director Ford’s signature colognes, which can retail for hundreds of dollars at high-end stores. The high cost of the pricey gift caused the HFPA members, who are forbidden from accepting gifts with a market value of more than $95, to return one of the two bottles back to Focus.
The award marks Taylor-Johnson’s first Golden Globe nomination and win.
Jimmy Fallon hosted the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards, which took place at the Beverly Hilton on Jan. 8.
