Abigail Lawrie is set to play Ann Axtell Morris, one of America’s first female archaeologists, in Coerte Voorhees’ true life historical epic Canyon Del Muerto for Visionary Film, First Line Films and The Vladar Company.
The indie project will also star Tom Felton, Val Kilmer, Elias Koteas, Ewen Bremner, Bronson Webb and Hanako Footman. Canyon Del Muerto will tell the true story of Axtell Morris, who helped discover North America’s first civilization.
She was married to Earl Halstead Morris, to be played by Felton, who, along with the historical character Sylvanus G. Morley (Bremner), offered the inspiration for Indiana Jones.
Lawrie starred in Amazon Prime’s Tin Star and FilmNation and Lantern Entertainment’s The Man with the Iron Heart. Felton played Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise, while Kilmer appears in the upcoming The Birthday Cake mob drama, alongside Ewan McGregor.
Voorhees penned the script for Canyon El Muerto based on two books by Axtell Morris, who was also an artist and writer, and will also produce the indie alongside John Voorhees. The movie is set to start production in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Oct. 26.
“I want to introduce the story of this heroic and tragic, pioneering woman to audiences around the world because her story was so inspiring to me. We are honored to be working with Ann’s remaining family in addition to the Navajo Nation and National Park Service to retell her story that was lost to time,” Voorhees said in a statement.
Lauren Selig, Edwin Mejia Jr, Luke Daniels and Jeff Gum will executive produce alongside Voorhees. Spiro Frentzas, John Monckton, Vernon LaVia, Leonard J. Brink, Roger Welp, Jay Stamatis, Jeri Calvetti and Thomas Cali also share the executive producer credits alongside Jeff Botelho and Mary Munez as co-executive producers.
Voorhees is repped by Greenberg Traurig; Lawrie is repped by Gordon and French; Felton is repped by 42, The Gersh Agency and Management 360. Kilmer is repped by Vault Entertainment and Hirsch, Wallerstein.
