Alexander Wang is known for his designs, but if he ever departs the fashion industry, he would make a very successful party promoter.
Many of the stratagems at Wang’s afterparty on Saturday night — Hooter’s waitresses and pole dancers — could come off as camp to sophisticated New Yorkers, who have seen the whole proletariat scheme played up numerous times. But as Wang is known to do, the idea was amplified at the party at Pier 94, where his show had been held immediately before.

“I don’t want to see anybody sober,” the designer said to a massive crowd, including his hand-chosen celebrities like The Weeknd, Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner and boyfriend Tyga, as well as editors and tastemakers. “Take the person’s drink next to you and chug it!”
Wang’s pole dancers weren’t just randomly recruited for the night from Sapphire Gentleman’s Club. Instead Mona Marie, a pole dancing choreographer who has helped put together moves for Madonna‘s current “Rebel Heart” tour directed a number of the pole dancers and participated in the show herself.
As for the other performances, Wang pulled out all the stops: Tinashe, Lil Wayne and Ludacris all hit the stage, performing multiple musical numbers each. From the VIP section, where the majority of celebrities were separated even further from the masses as they watched the performances, Victoria’s Secret models danced on tables; Lady Gaga clutched on to emerging designer Haley Newman; Nicki Minaj snapped selfies; and Kanye West chatted with professional race-car driver Lewis Hamilton, who had sat front row earlier in the evening at the fashion show.

Hamilton had been a bit more photo friendly than West: Prior to Wang’s show starting, Yeezy had pulled his hoodie over his head and refused to have his picture taken. Hopefully, he lightened up a bit at the afterparty.
