For the second straight year, Ira Glass’ series “This American Life” has won the International Documentary Assn. prize for best continuing series.
Stephen Walker’s “Young@Heart,” which looks at a senior citizen choral group, earned the IDA/Alan Ett Music Documentary Award.
In the limited series category, the prize goes to “Sin City Law,” Denis Poncet, Jean Xavier De Lestrade and Remy Burkel’s eight-part Sundance Channel episodic chronicling the criminal justice system in Las Vegas.
The IDA/Pare Lorentz Award goes to David Novack’s “Burning the Future: Coal in America.” “Garbage Warrior,” from filmmaker Oliver Hodge, earned an honorable mention in the category.
The IDA/ABCNews VideoSource Award for best use of archival news footage goes to “War Child,” C. Karim Chrobog’s film about a Sudanese child solider who emerges as an international rap star.
“As We Forgive,” directed by American University student Laura Waters Hinson, has earned the David L. Wolper Student Filmmaker Award, recognizing the next generation of documentary filmmakers.
The winner of the top feature documentary prize — “Young@Heart” will compete against “Kassim the Dream,” “Stranded: I’ve Come From a Plane That Crashed in the Mountains,” “Man on Wire” and “Waltz With Bashir” — will be announced Dec. 5 at the 2008 IDA Documentary Awards at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles. The audience awards also will be unveiled.
