One more piece in the jigsaw puzzle of Broadway’s spring real-estate map just got put into place.
The musical adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis‘ era-defining novel American Psycho has locked down a home, with previews now scheduled to begin on March 24 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
As previously announced, Benjamin Walker will play the lead role of Patrick Bateman, the well-heeled Manhattan investment banker whose late-’80s nocturnal high-life recreation runs from cocaine to carnage. The character was played by Christian Bale in the 2000 movie version.
The musical features a book by playwright, screenwriter and Marvel Comics author Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, whose writing credits include HBO’s Looking and Big Love, the 2013 feature remake of Carrie and the Broadway behemoth Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. The show’s score is by alt-rock tunesmith Duncan Sheik, whose Tony-winning hit Spring Awakening is currently being revived on Broadway.

Director Rupert Goold‘s staging of American Psycho debuted in 2013 at London’s Almeida Theatre, with Matt Smith, of Doctor Who fame, as Bateman. Choreography is by Lynne Page.
The production was originally slated to have its U.S. premiere this year as part of off-Broadway company Second Stage’s season. However, plans changed when the rights holders, Act 4 Entertainment, teamed with Broadway producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel on the project.
An official opening date has not yet been set for American Psycho, which follows the limited run of David Mamet‘s China Doll, starring Al Pacino, into the Schoenfeld. Richards and Frankel are also lead producers on that play.
Walker will next be seen onscreen in Ron Howard‘s film of the 19th century whaling saga In the Heart of the Sea, which stars Chris Hemsworth. His previous Broadway credits include Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Additional casting for American Psycho is to be announced.
