What a culture club it was on Saturday night, as LACMA and co-chairs Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio brought together art (honoring artist Barbara Kruger) and film (honoring Quentin Tarantino) at the fourth annual LACMA Art & Film Gala. And of course, Gucci, one of the event’s major sponsors, helped usher in some major fashion moments on the carpet (hello, J. Lo and Amy Adams!) As if that weren’t enough, this year’s entertainment featured the newly-reunited Culture Club — members Roy Hay, Mikey Craig, Jon Moss and Boy George (in a Pharrell-like hat, a look that he brought back in the ’80s) — looking modern-day dapper in brand new stylish Gucci attire.
If it wasn’t for George’s hat, one might not have recognized them; the three could have easily been George’s handsome dates for the evening. It was Gucci creative director Frida Giannini and Eva Chow who personally wanted Culture Club, who played their mega hits, “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” “Karma Chameleon,” and “Son of a Preacher Man,” the latter as a tribute to Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction during the dinner portion of the LACMA mega fundraiser.
Of course, the attendees that stole the show was late-arriving Kim and Kanye. She packed into a jade green silk slinkyCushnie & Ochs gown that left little room for imagination – even in a crowd that included internationally famous artists like Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari. They immediately started posing for photos with Rachel Zoe, in a blazing coral gown, but the ultimate shot was between Kim and Kanye with China Chow and Moschino designer Jeremy Scott, who made China a chocolate strapless Moschino mermaid gown that even read “Moschino chocolate” in white letters all over it. Okay, it wasn’t Gucci – but it was very goochy-goochy-goo.
Green turned out to be the hue of the night, as so many ladies took the lead of Gucci’s Giannini and wore stark but textured black (Giannini’s in a Gucci one of a kind black silk gown with a deep v-neck and ribbon laced through jet crystal eyelets). Katherine Ross, with husband LACMA director Michael Govan, stood out in the pack in her dark emerald. “I guess green was the color of the evening,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. “My friend, the designer Juan Carlos Obando, picked the color for me. It’s a Gucci fall/winter gown in stores now.” Aside from Ross and Kardashian, philanthropist Lynda Resnick, stylist Jane Ross and Susan Smidt all wore a similar shade of dark green – a shade appearing to look like an emerald married to an old fashioned green glass Coke bottle. Given that this annual ball is right before the start of awards seasons (first up is the Hollywood Film Awards on Nov. 14), it’s safe to assume that black is back and dark green is the new red orcolbalt, depending on how you look at it.
But not every boldfacer went with those colors. Amy Adams opted for a deep v-neck royal blue silk with antique beading and glass embroidery from Gucci spring 2015. And we mean deep – she was sporting some American Hustle-style cleavage. Perhaps, she’s getting bolder now that she knows her way around some double stick tape. Jennifer Lopez, known for working those plunging necklines, arrived in a Gucci Premiere (couture) navy blue silk georgette gown, fully embroidered with metallic paillettes.

Kate Hudson went pale which tends to show off her quiet fire. She wore a Gucci Premiere rose silk chiffon, one-shoulder gown with a twisted tulle overlay on a fully embroidered skirt and bodice. This layering of light fabrics – plus the color rose – will be definitely hitting the awards trail soon. Dakota Johnson also went nude in a Gucci cruise 2015 nude matte silk strapless gown with silver crystal tubular detail and pale pink high heels. Salma Hayek Pinault, the First Lady of Gucci, of course, had a Gucci One of a Kind dress in ivory silk with black diamonds and crystal embroidered shoulder straps.
Kirsten Dunst went understated chic in a Gucci black silk fall 2014 gown with a collar and an open back. British “It” model Cara Delevingne chose a Gucci Premiere black silk one-shoulder gown with a cape lined with silver embroidery – watch out for that caped gown look to come on strong this winter – reminiscent of Gwyneth Paltrow’s white Tom Ford at the Oscars a few years back.
And while black, green and blue were the peacock colors of the night, co-chair Eva Chow went for a Gucci One of a Kind purple silk crepe long sleeved gown with plunging neckline. “I wanted to wear color and I wanted to wear sleeves,” she smiled. “And Gucci indulged me, and I’m very grateful.” Jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer, who came with husband Tobey Maguire, defied all the rules and went for a white tiered chiffon short dress from Saint Laurent. “It’s Gucci’s sister company so I feel like it’s okay,” she laughed.
The gentlemen were in Gucci, too. Along with Culture Club, there was Tarantino himself, Michael Govan, Muse’s Matthew Bellamy, Chadwick Boseman, James Franco (a Gucci loyalist), Garrett Hedlund (who arrived with girlfriend Kirsten Dunst), artist Kris Knight (whose animated florals are on the giant screen as you arrive in the newly renovated Gucci boutique on Rodeo), Alex Pettyfer and rising star Eddie Redmayne.
Theory of Everything star Redmayne, who donned a Gucci one of a kind black cashmere peak lapel two button suit, was introduced by awards season PR heavyweight Peggy Siegal. If her introduction was any indication, Redmayne may be on his way to garnering various nominations for his astounding role as the great scientist Stephen J. Hawking. “I worked terribly hard for months,” confessed Redmayne about having to appear twisted and deformed from ALS. “It wasn’t exactly comfortable. Plus I kept hearing the crew say things like, ‘role of his career’ and that was rather intimidating. But now that we’re screening the film more, and people are really responding to it, I feel more confident.” And one thing’s for sure, he’ll be red-carpet ready, too.
