Amy Adams, Ethan Hawke and Oliver Stone are set to receive the actress, actor and director tributes at this year’s Gotham Independent Film Awards, it was announced Wednesday.
The annual awards show — recognizing independent films and their writers, directors, producers and actors — will also present an industry tribute, with that honoree yet to be named.
Adams — who stars in two Oscar hopefuls, Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals and Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival — will receive the actress tribute. Stone — whose latest film Snowden, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the NSA leaker, hits theaters on Sept. 16 — will receive the director tribute. Hawke, who will receive the actor tribute, was recently seen as Chet Baker in Born to be Blue and will next appear in Antoine Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven, which will open the Toronto International Film Festival before hitting theaters on Sept. 23. His other 2016 films include The Phenom, Maggie’s Plan and In A Valley of Violence, which premiered at SXSW and is set to hit theaters in October. Hawke also appears in Maudie, which premiered at Telluride and is still seeking a distributor as it heads to Toronto.
“We are honored to have Amy Adams, Ethan Hawke and Oliver Stone as our actress, actor and director tribute honorees at this year’s Gotham Awards,” Joana Vicente, executive director of the Independent Filmmakers Project, which presents the Gotham Awards, and the Made in NY Media Center, said in a statement. “Each with a remarkable body of work that continues to challenge, thrill, and inspire audiences, we are proud to celebrate their numerous artistic achievements and honor their contributions to the landscape of cinema with these tributes.”
Past tribute recipients include Robert Redford, Helen Mirren, Todd Haynes, Steve Golin, Matt Damon, Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet, Bennett Miller, Richard Linklater, Spike Lee, David O. Russell, Ted Sarandos, Jeff Skoll, Tom Rothman, James Schamus and Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
The Gotham Awards traditionally marks the official start of Oscar season, recognizing the best in independent film. Recent previous winners have included Oscar nominees and winners Spotlight, Birdman, Boyhood, Citizenfour, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Act of Killing, Moonrise Kingdom, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Beginners, The Tree of Life, Winter’s Bone and The Hurt Locker.
The 2016 Gotham Awards will be handed out on Monday, Nov. 28, at New York’s Cipriani Wall Street. Nominations will be announced on Oct. 20.
