Media outlets, including CNN and the New York Times, broke into their coverage Thursday morning to announce the report that Rep. Anthony Weiner has told close friends he will resign from congress.
The Democratic politician has been under fire since it was revealed he sent nearly-nude photos of himself to six women. He is married to Hillary Clinton adviser Huma Abedin, who was reportedly instrumental in his decision. Anthony Weiner: Hollywood’s 10 Best Twitter Jokes
When photos first began to surface, Weiner said his Twitter account had been hacked, then he said he was unsure if it was him in the photos. When more women began coming forward, he admitted it was him, and that he was checking into an undisclosed medical facility for treatment. He faced growing pressure to step down from his position (including by President Barack Obama) after it became known he sent photos to teenager. ABC News paid between $10,000 and $15,000 to license the texts, photos and messages from one woman who corresponded with Weiner.
Democratic leaders had planned to hold a meeting on Thursday to decide which committees he should no longer serve on, according to the Times.
The House ethics committee has opened a formal inquiry into his conduct. If he does in fact resign, that investigation would be dropped.
