After years of increasingly hard-core cardiovascular yoga, classes known as restoratives are back. After a brief period of stretching, the practice takes you slowly through poses supported by blocks, blankets and straps.
More than simply resting with focused breathing, restoratives open the body passively. Some classes involve gentle backbends to help reverse spine curvature caused by hunching over a computer. Classes are available at Exhale in Venice (245 S. Main St.), taught by Aaron Reed, and at L.A.’s Modo Yoga (340 S. La Brea Ave.).
Says Modo Yoga LA co-founder Deena Robertson: “We didn’t think it would be the most popular class, and often it’s packed. For crazed top execs who are just go-go-go all the time, it’s the one time they can just stop and let go.”
