LONDON – Apple’s legal fight against the Samsung Galaxy tablets was dealt a blow in the U.K.
A judge here has ordered Apple to publish a notice on its U.K. web site and in British newspapers to alert consumers to a ruling that Samsung didn’t copy the tech giant’s designs for the iPad, Bloomberg News reported.
But the judge declined to grant Samsung an injunction blocking Apple from saying that the Galaxy infringed its design rights.
The consumer notice about the Samsung ruling must be posted on Apple’s U.K. home page for six months and published in newspapers and magazines, the report said.
Apple is expected to appeal the decision. “No company likes to refer to a rival on its web site,” Bloomberg quoted an Apple lawyer as saying.
Apple has filed lawsuits around the globe, including in the U.S. and Germany, against new tablet competitors such as Google and Samsung. The U.K. judge had ruled that the iPad and Samsung’s tablet were unlikely to be confused by consumers given that he latter isn’t “as cool,” according to Bloomberg.
“Should Apple continue to make excessive legal claims based on such generic designs, innovation in the industry could be harmed and consumer choice unduly limited,” Samsung said.
