Ariana Grande released the music video for her latest single “God is a woman” on Friday (July 13). Grande teased the release of the music video on Twitter before its release at noon.
The clip, directed by Dave Meyers, features the artist inserted into a number of feminist and religious images. In one shot, Grande lays in in a mural-like pool that consists of paint. Grande is also seen sitting as men shout insults at her, though she appears to be unbothered by the hateful words.
A notable religious setting featured in the music video is of Grande surrounded by female choir members dressed in all white. The video concludes with a feminist reimagining of Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam, in which women are gravitating toward each other as opposed to Adam and God in the original painting.
Another memorable moment in the video comes at the 2:23 mark when Grande stops singing and begins to mouth along to Madonna’s reading of Samuel L. Jackson’s speech from the 1994 film Pulp Fiction. “I will strike down upon thee, with great vengeance and furious anger, those who attempt to poison and destroy my sisters, and you will know my name is the Lord, when I lay my vengeance upon you,” says Madonna.
“God is a woman” is the second single off of Grande’s upcoming album Sweetener, which is set to come out Aug. 17.
Grande received support from fiancé Pete Davidson before the song’s release. He wrote on Thursday (July 12) on an Instagram story, “GIAW at midnight..this is one of my favorite songs on the album it’s bonkers!!!”
When the song dropped, Davidson posted a photo of himself wearing “God is a woman” merchandise with a caption that read, “GIAW out now !!!!”
