They’ve faced off in the comic books multiple times — most recently, and most dramatically, in 2012’s Avengers vs. X-Men miniseries — but movie audiences shouldn’t expect to see Marvel’s mightiest heroes take on Hugh Jackman et al. any time soon, according to Avengers: Infinity War co-director Joe Russo.
“As far as we know, right now there isn’t talk regarding the X-Men,” Russo — who’ll co-direct the next two Avengers movies with brother Anthony — told Comicbook.com, likely breaking a million fans’ hearts in the process.
Fans had speculated that the mutant heroes might cross over into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following the deal with Sony that allowed Spider-Man to cross studios and enter the MCU in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War, but according to Russo, the situation is very different.
“Sony and Marvel had a relationship through [Marvel Studios head] Kevin [Feige] and [Spider-Man producer] Amy [Pascal] and through us and Amy. That’s really how Spider-Man came about,” said Russo. “It requires a certain alchemy and a very special situation for studios to share properties.”
All isn’t entirely lost, however. Russo made sure to hedge his bets slightly, saying, “I don’t know if behind-the-scenes there were conversations or if there are conversations happening, but we certainly haven’t heard of any.” Perhaps it’s time for Bryan Singer and the folks over at Fox to start getting friendly with the Russos. How else will movie audiences discover Magneto’s previously undisclosed telepathic powers?
