Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see a designer’s latest collection inspiring the designs of fast fashion labels such as H&M and Zara. While one might expect designers to be upset at seeing their copied designs displayed in the windows of those stores, Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing feels otherwise.

“I think it was Coco Chanel who said if you’re original, be ready to be copied,” Rousteing, 28, told The Independent. “I love seeing a Zara window with my clothes mixed with Celine and Proenza [Schouler]! I think that’s genius. It’s even better than what I do! … When I did my Miami collection and we did the black-and-white checks, I knew they would be in Zara and H&M. But they did it in a clever way — they mixed a Celine shape with my Balmain print! Well done! I love that.”
Rousteing, who featured a diverse cast of models for Balmain’s fall campaign, also shares how much it meant to have Rihanna modeling for the French fashion house’s spring 2014 ads. “It was really important that she was doing the campaign because she’s my muse, she’s my icon, and she’s my friend,” he said, adding that she knows how to own her style. “That’s exactly what I want. I love seeing a woman, the feeling of a model, a top model.”
