Film adaptations of Leo Tolstoy’s classic work of Russian literature, Anna Karenina, have always inspired fashion trends.
But director Joe Wright’s new and hyper-stylized version of the tragic 1800s love story, with spectacular costumes designed by the two-time Oscar-nominated designer Jacqueline Durran, has already launched a Banana Republic Holiday collection based on the film.
Karenina will be in theaters on Nov. 16 in limited release. But the clothes will be available in stores and online on Oct. 30.

Lace, faux fur and velvet are key elements in Banana Republic’s 76-piece range for men and women, created in collaboration with Durran. The line captures the era’s brooding elegance, using brocade mixed with lace and chiffon, along with rich colors such as crimson, burgundy, and merlot. And black, of course. That’s a given. And what would a Russian period fashion flashback be without some fur. But thankfully, this fur is guilt-free faux.

“The fur cossack hats on the mannequins are actually scarves — pieces like that are functional for cold weather but beautiful to wear,” said Simon Kneen, Banana Republic’s creative director. “I do love the chiffon dress with lace tights. I can easily picture Keira [Knightley] in it, too.”
Kneen explains that it is all about taking key elements of that time period — sophisticated color, fabrics, and beautiful detailing — and translating that into an updated wardrobe. “Small touches such as lace and fur embellishments portray a classic sense of luxury without requiring a full look that may feel ‘costumey.’

He advises against a full-on 19th Century look. That would look too Halloweeny. “Instead, he advises: “Mix and match with more modern pieces to keep it current.”
The prices will range from $39.50 for a blouse to $325 for a coat, and $29.50 for for jewelery, to $250 for a handbag.
