MGM Television’s The Handmaid’s Tale will be honored as the 2017 Program of the Year at the upcoming Banff World Media Festival.
Yvonne Strahovski, star of the Hulu critical favorite, and executive producer Warren Littlefield (Fargo) will receive the tribute during a June 13 gala ceremony, while the pair also plan a master class a day later.
The drama, starring Elisabeth Moss, takes place in Gilead, a futuristic world in which fertility issues abound and women’s rights are a thing of the past. In order to keep the population up, government officials in a totalitarian society send young and fertile women — the “handmaids” — to affluent families, where they are forced to help couples procreate via sexual servitude.
“Already renewed for a second season, The Handmaid’s Tale has instantly been recognized as one of the most compelling dramas on television,” Ferne Cohen, executive director of the Banff World Media Festival, said Thursday in a statement.
Season two of the series, based on the book of the same name by Margaret Atwood and shot in Canada, will return for its sophomore run in 2018. The Handmaid’s Tale airs on Bravo in Canada, and is also available internationally in Australia on SBS, Central Europe on HBO CE and the U.K. on Channel 4 and is coming soon to France on Orange.
The 10-part series was created for TV by Bruce Miller (The 100), who serves as showrunner. Executive producers are Miller, Littlefield, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears and Ilene Chaiken.
The Handmaid’s Tale is produced by MGM Television and is distributed internationally by MGM.
The 38th Banff World Media Festival is set to run June 11-14 in the Canadian Rockies.
