Hot off several red-carpet appearances at the Cannes Film Festival, which wraps May 28, Bella Hadid is trading in her glamourous gowns for a strappy Nike sports bra and distressed denim. Her latest look is part of new role as the face of Nike’s new Cortez sneaker campaign in celebration of the style’s 45th anniversary.
In the campaign, Hadid, whose partnership with Nike was unveiled in November 2016, re-creates an iconic Farrah Fawcett image from the ‘70s, in which the actress is seen skateboarding in a pair of Cortez sneakers on the Charlie’s Angels set.
The Cortez has long been a Hollywood and hip-hop style favorite, worn by Tom Hanks in the Oscar best picture winner Forrest Gump, and name-checked by Kendrick Lamar in his verse on Big Sean’s track “Control.”
Designed by Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, the Cortez was released in 1972 and provided advanced shock absorption at the heel with a mid-sole cushioning system that sandwiched a layer of harder sponge rubber between two layers of soft sponge rubber. The first women’s version of the shoe, the Senorita Cortez, was released two years later.
The classic Nike Cortez drops at nike.com on June 1.
