Germany’s candidate for best foreign language film at next year’s Oscars is Dominik Graf‘s historic melodrama Beloved Sisters.
The period picture, which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, tells the story of German romantic poet Friedrich Schiller and his supposed three-way love affair between his eventual wife, Charlotte von Lengefeld, and her older sister, Caroline.
Florian Stetter stars as Schiller with Hannah Herzsprung and Henriette Confurius playing the von Lengefeld sisters.
“Fantastic! I love it! Schiller goes to Hollywood!” said director Graf after hearing of the film’s nomination by an independent jury of German film industry professionals.
Music Box Films picked up Beloved Sisters for the U.S. and Canada shortly after its Berlin premiere.
Germany has not received a best foreign language film nomination at the Oscars since Michael Haneke‘s The White Ribbon was nominated in 2009. The last German film to win the Oscar was Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck‘s The Lives of Others in 2006.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will pick the five foreign language nominees on Jan. 15, and the winner will be announced at the 87th Oscars on Feb. 22.
