LD Entertainment, Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions released the first trailer for Ben is Back on Friday (Aug. 24).
Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges lead the Peter Hedges-directed film. Peter Hedges, father to Lucas, also wrote the script. The supporting cast includes Kathryn Newton, Alexandra Park and Courtney B. Vance.
Ben is Back follows 19-year-old Ben Burns (Hedges), who unexpectedly returns to his family’s suburban house on the morning of Christmas Eve. Holly (Roberts), Ben’s mother, is relieved that he is back home but worries that his visit will negatively impact his sobriety. Over the 24 hours leading to Christmas day, new revelations about Ben emerge as Holly’s undying love for her son is tested and she tries to keep him safe.
The film is set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 8. Roadside Attractions plan to theatrically release Ben is Back on Dec. 7, which is a prime release date for awards-season hopefuls.
