Proposals are a beautiful moment that you’ll repeat in stories over and over again. But the ring? In this day and age, that’s something you share ASAP on all social media platforms, waiting for the likes and comments to roll in. Which is why it’s key that your nails be as on point as the rock. Says celebrity nail stylist Stephanie Stone, “It’s really not about getting your nails done, [but] it’s going to make you happy when you pull out your engagement photos in five, 10 or 20 years and see all the little details in place.”
Obviously not all women know the moment they’re about to be proposed to, like the Bachelorette did this week, but when you have an inkling of a special night to come, it’s a good idea to be safe and get the perfect complementary manicure that will be Instagram-ready. (If your nails are in bad shape at the time of proposal, consider waiting to share a snap until the next day — after getting a nail job.)

As for the shade, Stone, whose clients include Miley Cyrus, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Alessandra Ambrosio, says to “pick a color that is true to you, while keeping it chic, classic and timeless. My recommendations are classic colors that are going to complement the ring but still let it stand out: nudes, reds [by RGB, $18], sheer pinks [like Chanel’s Mica Rose, $27].”
Furthermore, “stick to a color that reflects your personality and you feel comfortable wearing, but keep the look solid, and skip the nail art — you want to let your ring take the spotlight!” For those who are really dedicated to nail art, she mandates: “no more mademoiselle white tips” but instead suggests a modern twist on a French tip, moon or V mani in neutral tones.

Lastly, nails should be trimmed and given a natural shape, as opposed to talons, which would fight for attention in the photo. And, “even if your nails look great in your photo, but your hands look dry, you are going to cringe when you look back. My favorite products are Dr. Hauschka Neem Nail Oil [$40] and John Masters Organics Bare lotion [$15].” Voila — the recipe for a ring shot that will garner hundreds of likes.
