The Hollywood Reporter has released the fifth installment of its weekly web series The Hollywood Reporters. In each episode, THR awards analyst Scott Feinberg, the series’ host, chats with colleagues from THR‘s newsroom about different aspects of the awards race.

This week, Feinberg was joined by film editor Gregg Kilday to discuss the wide-open best picture Oscar race, about which Kilday jokes, “Nobody knows anything.”
This year’s nine best picture nominees include the likes of Argo (winner of best picture at the Critics’ Choice Awards and best picture, drama, at the Golden Globes), Les Miserables (winner of best picture, musical or comedy, at the Golden Globes), Life of Pi (which scored a nom in every one of the Academy’s technical categories), Lincoln (whose 12 Oscar noms is the most of any film this year), Silver Linings Playbook (which received a nom in each of the Academy’s four acting categories, the first time that’s happened in 31 years) and Zero Dark Thirty (which has been nominated by virtually every major awards group this year).

What we do know is that, historically, few films have won the best picture Oscar without also scoring Oscar noms in each of several other categories: best director; best film editing; best adapted or original screenplay; and at least one of the four devoted to acting (best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress). This year, only two films pulled that off: Lincoln and Silver Linings Playbook. But there appear to be large constituencies for several of the films that failed to do so, and Feinberg and Kilday discuss whether one of them might be in a position to defy history.
