Janet Jackson continued her comeback Sunday night, making a rare public appearance at the BET Awards to accept an “ultimate icon” award.
Although she didn’t perform, as many fans had hoped, Jackson took the stage in an all-white outfit to accept the Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award following an introduction from longtime collaborators Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and a dance tribute from Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe.
Jackson seemed touched by the accolade, even as the multi-Grammy award winner noted how heavy the BET trophy was.
“It’s been a very long journey to this moment,” she said. “My heart is so full. Thank you God for making anything, everything possible.” Jackson also thanked her mother and father who were sitting in the audience.
And she referenced “Rhythm Nation’s” lyrics and message, saying it hasn’t yet been realized.
“Twenty-five years ago, we created “Rhythm Nation” hoping the world would be a better place,” she added. “But there’s even more to be done.”
Jackson’s career is also not yet done. After a multi-year absence, she’s set to release her first new album in seven years this fall and is embarking on a world tour starting Aug. 31 in Vancouver. She also released her new single “No Sleeep” last Monday.
Before Jackson accepted her award, Tinashe, Jason Derulo and Ciara showed their mastery of some of Jackson’s memorable choreography, matching her dance moves from the videos for “The Pleasure Principle,” “All for You,” “If” and “Rhythm Nation,” with Ciara crushing the latter two songs.
