Among those in attendance were co-creator and star Pamela Adlon, Mikey Madison, Hannah Alligood, Olivia Edward and Adlon’s three real-life daughters and mother.
Better Things is joint project between Adlon and Louis C.K., who previously worked together on Louie. Both Louie and Better Things center on a divorcee living in a big city and raising several kids. “Now with Better Things they pushed their long-time collaborator and friend Pamela Adlon into the spotlight. And the result is magnificent,” said Dominic Pagone, senior vp communications at FX Networks.
Adlon, who has voiced roles on King of the Hill and Bob’s Burgers, plays a single mother in her 40s struggling under the pressure of raising three daughters and finding acting gigs in Hollywood.
“I wouldn’t be here without my daughters. They keep me going. And I want you guys to stand up, my three real daughters. Their lives came through my vagina. You guys are my inspiration. All the odds and the glory,” said Adlon told THR at the premiere.
Better Things is inspired by the actress’ real life. “You moved out. You’ve never been home so much. It’s the best thing ever,” joked Adlon, a single mother herself, about her oldest daughter. In the show, Max is the counterpart of Pamela’s oldest daughter, who is also the most rebellious, giving her mother constant headaches.
“She really evolves throughout the season. I think she’s trying to figure out who she wants to be and who she doesn’t want to be. She goes about it by doing so many different things. I think that throughout the season you will see her arc,” said Madison, who plays the oldest daughter, Max.
On her hope for the new FX series, Adlon shared, “I always have my legacy, which is my daughters. And now I have a new one, which is the show, which I’m so proud of. And I hope it elevates and inspires people. That’s what it’s meant for.”
Better Things premieres Sept. 8 on FX.
