Stephen Adly Guirgis has won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for drama with Between Riverside and Crazy, his play about a feisty, retired African- American New York police officer still seeking justice in a lingering lawsuit against the department while facing eviction from his Manhattan apartment.
The play premiered off-Broadway last summer at the Atlantic Theatre Company in an acclaimed production directed by Austin Pendleton, starring Stephen McKinley Henderson. It was brought back by Second Stage Theatre in a return engagement earlier this year.

Guirgis is a longtime member of New York’s LAByrinth Theatre Company; his previous plays include Our Lady of 121st Street, Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, The Little Flower of East Orange and The Motherf—er With the Hat, which premiered on Broadway with Bobby Cannavale and Chris Rock.
The other plays shortlisted for this year’s Pulitzer Prize for Drama were Jordan Harrison‘s Marjorie Prime, which imagines an intersection between technology and grief; and previous winner Suzan-Lori Parks‘ lyrical slavery epic Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3), part of an ongoing historical cycle.
Meanwhile, Annie Baker‘s The Flick, 2014’s Pulitzer winner, returns to off-Broadway in director Sam Gold‘s acclaimed original production, beginning performances May 5 at the Barrow Street Theatre.
