Despite Marvel Entertainment confirming that it won’t be releasing any tie-in material to Disney’s animated Big Hero 6, American audiences won’t miss out on the chance to see Baymax and Hiro in comic book action — although it’ll come from another publisher altogether.
Hachette’s manga imprint Yen Press announced via Twitter this weekend that it would be publishing an English-language version of Haruki Ueno’s Baymax, an all-new story featuring characters from the movie created for Japanese publisher Kodansha’s Magazine Special.
Describing the internal response to the news as “ecstatic,” the tweet offered scant details on the English-language edition of the material, noting that final details such as publication date were “still to be determined.”
The announcement comes on the heels of comments from Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso about his company’s lack of plans relating to the release of the movie this November. Following earlier reports that Marvel had no plans to rerelease any of the original Big Hero 6 comics to tie in with the release of the Disney movie in November, Alonso told Comic Book Resources that, because of the difference between comic book and movie versions of the characters, reissuing the original comics “would be a disservice to filmgoers.”
“We wanted the Disney folks to be able to create their own style and story, unencumbered by those older stories,” Alonso continued. “We have a catalog of stuff that we can reprint, but we have no intention of doing anything related to the movie.” Asked about any new material using the characters, Alonso said there were no plans “at this stage.”
Big Hero 6 will be released on Nov. 7.
