Getty ImagesNEW YORK — Sarah Jessica Parker has been confirmed to take on her first New York stage role in more than a decade, starring opposite Blythe Danner in The Commons of Pensacola, which marks the debut as a professional playwright of actress Amanda Peet.
Word of the production has been circulating in the theater community since early March, with conflicting reports as to whether the play was headed for a Broadway or off-Broadway premiere. Manhattan Theatre Club has opted for the latter, likely reserving a Broadway move as a subsequent possibility if the production proves a hit.
Preview performances begin Oct. 22, with official opening scheduled for Nov. 21 at New York City Center Stage I. The play will be staged by MTC artistic director Lynne Meadow, currently represented on Broadway with her production of Richard Greenberg‘s critically acclaimed The Assembled Parties.
In Peet’s play, Danner will appear as the wife of a Wall Street financier divested of her assets when her husband’s scam becomes headline news. Parker will play the daughter who turns up with her filmmaker boyfriend to visit in the one-bedroom Florida condo to which her mother has retreated.
Danner and Parker co-starred in MTC’s 1995 production of A.R. Gurney‘s Sylvia. Danner is appearing on Broadway with Parker’s husband, Matthew Broderick, in the Gershwin musical Nice Work If You Can Get It.
Parker’s most recent New York stage role was in MTC’s 2001 off-Broadway premiere of David Lindsay-Abaire‘s Wonder of the World. Her most recent Broadway appearance was in Once Upon a Mattress in 1996, but her pre-Sex and the City career on the Great White Way stretches way back, notably to her role as a 1979 replacement for the title character in the original production of Annie.
Peet recently has been featured in a recurring role on The Good Wife and next appears in Mark and Jay Duplass‘ HBO comedy Togetherness. Her New York theater credits include the Neil LaBute plays Break of Noon and This Is How It Goes and a Broadway revival of Neil Simon‘s Barefoot in the Park.
Additional cast and creative team for The Commons of Pensacola are to be announced.
