Irish singer and charity activist Bob Geldof said he blames himself for the death of his daughter Peaches Geldof in a moving interview with ITV broadcast on Wednesday.
The Boomtown Rats frontman and the driving force behind the Band Aid and Live Aid concerts said he had spoken to Peaches after she had began seeking help for slipping back into her heroin addiction, but he said his words had “clearly failed.”
TV personality Peaches, 25, was found dead at her home in April from a heroin overdose, her death echoing the tragic end of her mother Paula Yates, who similarly overdosed on heroin in 2000. Yates was the partner of INXS frontman Michael Hutchence who committed suicide in 1997.
Peaches had began using heroin again in February, and Geldof said she had “tried very hard” to deal with the pressures in her life, but “didn’t make it”.
Geldof said returning to music helped him deal with the “incomprehensible” loss of his daughter. Geldof has been on a The Boomtown Rats reunion tour recently, which he said was “cathartic.”
The Boomtown Rats are famous for their hits “I Don’t Like Mondays” and “Rat Trap,” Geldof left the band 28 years ago to go solo.
