NEW YORK — Bobby Cannavale is doing double duty on Broadway this season, signing up to star opposite Al Pacino in the fall in a revival of David Mamet‘s 1984 Pulitzer Prize winning drama about a ruthless bunch of real estate sharks, Glengarry Glen Ross.
The play begins previews Oct. 16 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, with official opening set for Nov. 11. Directing the production is Daniel Sullivan, who last steered Pacino to a Tony Award nomination two seasons ago in The Merchant of Venice.
Produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Jam Theatricals, the revival marks the 30th anniversary of Mamet’s groundbreaking play, which he wrote in 1982. The same team also produced the Tony-winning 2005 Glengarry revival that starred Liev Schreiber and Alan Alda, as well as recent Broadway revivals of Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow and A Life in the Theatre, and premieres of his new plays November and Race.
Richards and Frankel also have the premiere of Mamet’s The Anarchist on their fall Broadway slate this season, starring Debra Winger and Patti LuPone.
Cannavale will play hot-shot broker Ricky Roma in the Glengarry production, the role portrayed by Pacino in the 1992 screen version. Pacino will take on fading former sales ace Shelley “The Machine” Levene.
While the cutoff date for the revival has not yet been set, the limited engagement will free up Cannavale in time to maintain his previous commitment to star in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s spring 2013 revival of Clifford Odets‘ The Big Knife. Directed by Doug Hughes, that production starts previews at the American Airlines Theatre March 22 for an April opening.
Cannavale has appeared in two prior Broadway productions, Mauritius (2008) and The Motherf**ker With the Hat (2011), earning Tony nominations both times.
