The body of 20th Century Fox executive Gavin Smith has been found, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
An official at The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office confirmed the news, which Fox 11 reported on Wednesday’s broadcast. Officials identified a body found in Angeles National Forest last week as Smith’s. The station, which cited sources close to the investigation, said Smith’s family has been notified. Police are treating the case as a homicide, but no suspect has been named.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told THR that they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Smith’s death.
“On Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, human remains were found in the rural area of Palmdale, and the remains were identified to be 57-year-old Gavin Smith,” Deputy Sheriff Kelvin Moody told THR.
“The autopsy results have not been finalized, and the cause of death has not been determined,” Moody continued. “The investigation is still ongoing.”
Smith was declared dead in May.
Smith was an 18-year veteran of Fox’s distribution department. He disappeared on the night of May 1, 2012, and was last seen at friend’s residence in Oak Park, which is a community in Ventura County not far from Smith’s Calabasas office. He left the property in his black Mercedes-Benz E420 sedan between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. Smith, 57, stood at 6-foot-6 and played basketball for UCLA in the mid-1970s.
Police began treating the case as a homicide after Smith’s Mercedes-Benz was discovered on Feb. 21, 2013 in a Simi Valley storage facility connected to convicted drug dealer John Creech. Smith allegedly was having an affair with Creech’s wife.
