Getty ImagesNumerous rock veterans, including Sting, Green Day and Mumford & Sons, along with up-and-comers like Ed Sheeran and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, have taken to the booth this week to re-record classic protest songs in advance of next week’s G-8 summit in Northern Ireland.
U2 singer Bono’s organization, the ONE Campaign, is backing the rockers’ agit8 project in an effort to enlighten and influence key leaders at the summit.
The project calls for the end of poverty and aims to encourage G-8 officials to increase food production in Africa, as well as facilitate international aid.
At least 50 songs were released online on Tuesday and include Sheeran’s rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War” and Mumford & Sons’ collaboration with Elvis Costello on Bruce Springsteen’s ”The Ghost of Tom Joad.”
The site allows its audience to listen to the “songs that changed the world” and to discover the tracks’ backstory, lyrics and political legacy.
