20th Century Fox has debuted the first trailer for The Book Thief, the movie adaptation of the best-selling novel by Markus Zusak.
In the clip, viewers meet Sophie Nelisse‘s Liesel, a young girl who’s sent to live with a couple played by Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson in Nazi Germany.
Liesel seems to have a habit of stealing books, saying at one point, “When life robs you, sometimes you have to rob it back.”

She bonds with her adoptive father, played by Rush, and a Jewish refugee named Max, whom the family hides, as they read and write and tell stories.
Max also appears to be a bit of a thief himself as he responds to her question about whether a book is his with “it wasn’t always mine,” her response to the same question.
The film, which is set to hit theaters on Nov. 15, also seems to explore the power of family and hope, something Liesel says she’s never understood at the beginning of the trailer.
The Book Thief is directed by Brian Percival and was adapted for the big screen by Michael Petroni.
